The return to daily routine need not be time consuming but present a meaningful shift with optimised results. Here is a simple combination that provides an instant relief yet feels fantastic every step of the way and leaves every inch of you bright, smooth and replenished! Use it every day for a fortnight and you’ll see such a difference:
For best results: Press onto damp cleansed face and body, in mornings and evenings, and your skin will look almost poreless, plumper, smoother and gradually brighter.
Wake-Up Droplets and Merry-Berry Plump boast a grouping of active ingredients that get you to your skin goals, blissfully:
Vitamin C and Arbutin: suitable for all types of skin, and both are very effective in the treatment of discolouration of the skin. When Arbutin is combined with vitamin C, their efficacy is increased.
Ellagic acid and Arbutin: clinical studies show a significant decrease in the level of melanin when combining Ellagic acid and Arbutin by shielding the skin from sun-induced pigmentation and free radical damage.
Ellagic acid and Salicylic Acid: a combination to help treat hyperpigmentation, tone skin and fade acne scars, simultaneously removing dead skin cells, and lightening skin areas with sun damage.
What the Cosmopolitan magazine beauty insiders say:
Foods to help recover from sun damage? Add tomatoes, carrots, blueberries and watermelon to salads to boost antioxidants for a healthy body and healthy, radiant skin. My favourite no-fuss lunch is watermelon gazpacho, as it takes no time at all to prepare - plus it reminds me of hot days by Adriatic sea.
Quick recipe:
1-2 large tomatoes, cut into chunks
Slice of watermelon and 1/2 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped
1/2 of bell pepper, chopped
1 small garlic clove, optional if you like the flavour
¼ teaspoons of sherry and red-wine vinegars, I sometimes replace with balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
Coarse salt and ground pepper
Chilli flakes, optional
Toasted or crusty bread, optional
Shaved Manchego cheese, optional
Step 1: In a food processor, puree tomato until almost smooth. Add cucumber, watermelon, bell pepper, garlic, vinegars, and oil and season with chilli, salt and pepper. Pulse until mostly smooth.
Step 2: Chill soup in the refrigerator 30 minutes (or up to 8 hours). Adjust seasoning; thin with water if necessary. Brush bread with oil. Serve soup drizzled with oil and topped with cheese, with bread alongside.
Autumn is looking brighter already! Ciao for now...

Whether your summer plans include a beach or city hopping, have you ever wondered why your skin is not tanning evenly or some areas are suddenly showing congestion bumps and dry patches?
As skin thickness varies, you’ll find that thinner skin areas tend to tan and show signs of stress and hyperpigmentation faster. For example, areas around eyes and temples, the back of hands, shoulders, chest as well as shins, have a thinner epidermal skin layer and tan first as well as show signs of dehydration and sun damage. Furthermore, melanin synthesis and pigment transfer to cells is faster in these areas and, if left untreated, then go on to develop as dark spots.
In contrast, the skin on chin, thighs, on back of legs and tummy is thicker and and ultraviolet (UV) rays take longer to penetrate it, hence these areas tend to tan more slowly. Skin here also needs more help to shed the dead skin cells and stimulate cell turnover, so to ensure a more even tan - and even skin tone too!
The one for even tan (and tone) allover: Purity Paste
If you’re spending time by the pool, rinse off skin after taking a dip to wash off any chlorine chemicals that tend to dry out skin and hair. Swimming in the sea or ocean is different as saltwater is detoxifying, and once washed off the skin is left smoother and healthy. Liberally apply moisture to your body, face and hair throughout your time in the sun - at least on areas with naturally thinner skin.
The one to take with you: Wake-Up Droplets
Day time - Vitamin C and antioxidants to brighten and help protect skin from free radicals. Extra perk: this mattifying formula takes down any unwanted shine, it’s a perfect shortcut to glass-like smooth skin. Hat on, the safe side is the shady side!
Night time - Arbutin, allantoin, PHA and prebiotic enzymes to soothe and treat skin after sun exposure, plus fade hyperpigmentation. Pre-bedtime tip: apply Wake-Up Droplets on damp skin, straight after showering, its naturally active formula feels like an extra cooling dip and helps to speed up skin healing overnight.
Take extra care with your evening cleanse. With SPF application, sweat and pollution we want to make sure to remove all of the impurities of the day, and adding a scoop of Purity Paste will help shift any stubborn debris from the pores without damaging skin’s barrier.
Skin may need some extra help to recover after days spent in the summer’s heat, try to create a trifecta of moisture so your skin can absorb moisture in three different stages. Start with a hydrating essence like Vitality Spritz, follow up with a nourishing non-comedogenic lotion Serenity Salve and seal with a plumping oil Merry-Berry Plump. Apply on damp skin and allow for 30 seconds after each step so to get maximum benefit from your routine.
The one to go to bed with: Serenity Salve
Cool as…Yogurt! My favourite way to quickly cool down any heat or sun burn is to apply a thick layer of yogurt straight after being in the direct sun. Probiotics found in Natural and Greek yoghurt can relieve sunburn as they work to restore the skin’s natural barrier and reduce inflammation. In fact it’s this soothing effect I wanted to have with Wake-Up Droplets formula, and I think you’ll agree it’s just as cooling but without the kitchen larder backdrop!
Recreate Saint Iris haven…on the Croatian Coast! There is nothing like being at “the source” of the best-in-class wellness. My forever favourite place to recharge is the Adriatic’s islands archipelago, often scarcely populated and wildly pure.
For your first venture to this region I’d recommend Brac and Hvar islands - both are a short ferry ride from Split and a picturesque introduction to Adriatic chicness. From olive groves, endless blue horizon, live like a goddess and dream of indulging your skin and senses - preferably in our Adriatic-inspired emerald glass vessels!
Stay at:
Lemongarden, Brač - adults only hotel
Maslina resort, Hvar (bottom image, above) - named after our favourite skincare ingredient: olive!
La Dolce Vita in the City:
Nothing says sustainable chic like a summer hat (Jacquemus, top left) or stylish straw bag, I’d carry mine throughout sunny spring and summer outings and food market expeditions. This White Company Straw Circle Shopper (top middle) version is perfect for city and beach!
Simply put, a skin purge refers to the reaction some skin has to certain products that contain “aggressive” ingredients. You may be told an increase in breakouts and acne is perfectly normal, yet we find that this is a rouse to buy and use too many skin irritants so to treat signs of sun damage.
What causes purging during summer?
Likewise, acne can be easily triggered by summer-time lifestyle changes – no matter your age or skin type – including an increase in intake of processed or fast foods, sugary chilled treats and alcohol, or hormonal imbalances and stress brought on by lack of sleep and travelling.
Fret not, we have you covered with our easy-breezy tips to treat skin safely!
Pore health is in part related to the overall elasticity of skin. Ingredients like vitamin A, which is readily absorbed and naturally converted to retinol by the body, help to keep pores smaller by promoting renewal within the skin, which in turn supports its overall structure. We love the vitamin-A-rich rosehip seed and cherry kernel oils which can be found in our Serenity Salve and Purity Paste.
These two multi-purpose heroes go that extra mile to treat skin prone to acne and summer breakouts; they might not be an actual Adriatic Coast getaway, but your skin will never know the difference!
Cosmetics to avoid during hot summers:
Your skin and your gut are linked physically and through various biochemical pathways, known as the ‘gut-skin axis’. Gut bacteria and their substances can induce an inflammatory reaction and irritate your skin.
Clear your skin by supporting your gut health:
Simplify your face and body care with these sensorial multitaskers, without compromising on visible results:
A much welcomed sunshine and warming sun-rays are responsible for the majority of skin ageing, with depletion of collagen and clarity, as well as hyperpigmentation.
Discover a Tetra-actives combination in our serum Wake-Up Droplets to make a seamless shift to smoother and happier skin, whether on face or body, thanks to its ‘under the radar’ Phytic acid, combined with Gluconolactone (PHA), Vitamin C, Prebiotic enzymes and Arbutin.
When paired in Wake-Up Droplets, Phytic acid works with:
How to use: apply on cleansed skin, morning and evening, or use as after-sun treatment to counter the effects of free radicals. For best results, smooth over slightly damp face and body daily. Keep in the fridge for extra cooling effect on sun-kissed or red skin.
It’s your shortcut to glass-like skin, and our bestseller for a good reason!
With sweat and pollution causing skin to feel congested, and SPF gaining priority, many of us give into the temptation to ditch lotions and creams during the summer months. At the same time, air conditioning, travelling and UV exposure can erase moisture from the skin, leaving it dehydrated and stressed.
Merry-Berry Plump oil provides a complete treatment for face and body. This silky, multitasking formula provides maximum effectiveness, with:
How to use: apply after serum, either in lieu of or just before your daily lotion, morning and evening. Use in the morning to help further protect skin from the environment’s stressors and leave it dewy-fresh, soft, hydrated; or after cleansing in the evenings to help restore and calm skin.
It’s our favourite 999-emergency oil to help smooth any unruly dry skin and add a pop of natural glow!
1. Double cleansing in evenings. The first cleanse will remove surface-level grime, like makeup, sweat and SPF, allowing your second cleanse to purify pores and prevent congestions. It’s perfectly fine to use the same cleanser twice, or try using our Purity Paste as an express purifying treatment. Just add a splash of water to turn the paste into fluffy cream texture and apply on damp skin. Avoiding eyes area, massage in before rinsing off. Tip: use a damp face cloth to pat and wipe off Purity Paste first, to ensure it’s thoroughly removed. Follow with your normal cleanser for a second cleanse. Clean skin is smooth, fresh, healthier and brighter-looking, and able to soak up serums or moisturisers you might smooth on after.
2. Year round protection with SPF. UVA rays are strongest during the summer months, use daily SPF to protect skin, and up your SPF to 50 throughout the summer. This will not only help shield your skin from sunburn and skin cancer, but also reduce hyperpigmentation and fine lines from forming. Tip: re-apply SPF regularly throughout the day to ensure you’re getting the full protection.
3. Choose non-comedogenic products. All Saint Iris products are formulated to not clog pores and help all skin types remain clear of any signs of congestion and stress whilst providing ample nourishment. Tip: although super sensorial, avoid products with shea butter and coconut oil as they are comedogenic ingredients and too rich for most oily and hormonal skin types.
4. Wear a hat and keep hydrated. Simple lifestyle tweaks can do wonders to take the stress out of skin care. Also, opt for cooling foods to reduce body’s heat and sweating. Fruits such as melons and strawberries, and vegetables including celery, cucumber, and cauliflower are great seasonal options and can be eaten raw in salads. Alternatively, add a bit of ice into smoothies since yogurt is also a cooling food. Delish!

But from Humectants, Emollients, Occlusives and everything in between, navigating the world of skin conditioning can be confusing. Here’s a quick guide to what they are, what they do, and how we use them.
The first step to formulating a superior lotion or cream is to combine ingredients that will help to hydrate and draw moisture into skin, restore skin’s natural moisturising oils, and then seal in moisture to prevent moisture loss. The balance of these three functions is achieved with humectants, emollients, and occlusive ingredients – and to let you in on a secret: superior face care and body care products should have all three of these groups included in their formulas.
Let’s meet them…
Humectants are hydrophilic ingredients and help hydrate by drawing water to them, like sponges, and hold in the skin. Humectants also help fill in fine lines and give skin a plump, supple look. The most well-known humectant is hyaluronic acid, famous for its ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water, with other skin-friendly examples such as glycerin, honey and aloe.
Emollients are moisturising ingredients that add oil to the skin to soften, smooth, and repair the skin barrier – and as they can influence how the skin cells function – they help to combat everyday moisture-sapping environmental elements like sun, wind, and cold.
There is a plethora of emollient ingredients, including cocoa butter, squalene, triglycerides (lipids), Vitamin E, ceramides, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, to name a few.
At Saint Iris, we are fans of triglycerides (sourced from a sustainable Italian olive origin), non-comedogenic ingredient shown to have a higher skin affinity; whilst we would recommend rosehip for oilier skin types, and jojoba for dry skin.
Occlusives are generally made up of large molecules that are unable to penetrate the skin, instead they act like a protective layer for your skin. Because they repel water, occlusives actually prevent the water that’s in your skin from evaporating and escaping into the air, as well as help to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier.
Popular occlusive agents include waxes such as beeswax, oils (olive and soybean), and shea butter.
A word of caution: we would not recommend shea butter for face or body skin care, due to its highly comedogenic (pore clogging) nature, particularly for skin types prone to congestion and acne. It’s a wonderful ingredient to use in treatment of dry elbows or feet, as it helps soften and heal cracked skin.
The rise in multistep skincare routine (inspired by Korean skincare routine, or K-beauty), single ingredient products (often called mono-dose or boosters), oil-only formulation skincare, as well as a long period of lockdowns during which we’ve had time to experiment and enjoy new rituals, have collectively led to skin issues such as compromised skin’s barrier, acute dryness or oiliness, breakouts, and sensitive skin.
The solution is simpler than you think:
Discover Serenity Salve, for a ‘feel beautifully comfortable' and calm skin all day long.
There are two common types of moisturisers – lotions and creams. Lotions tend to be thinner whereas creams tend to be made with heavier lipids and are more suited for use at night.
Serenity Salve is my modern take on Adriatic’s apothecary moisturisers, with a high concentration of humectants, emulsifiers and occlusives dispersed in its formula – which is what gives it its unique texture, neither too light nor too heavy, to provide skin with a combination of hydrating and moisturising benefits for day or night time care. It is easily spreadable, dries quickly and adds moisture to the skin without clogging the pores or irritating blemish-prone skin types, and at the same time it is ideal for dry, sensitive skin.
In addition to its skin-transforming actives, the conditioning ingredients used in Serenity Salve include:
Add Serenity Salve into your routine – and keep it simple!
Step 1: Thoroughly cleanse face and body, or use Purity Paste as cleansing balm (just add a splash of water and mix into creamy texture) to slough away any congestion build up of dry / flakey texture.
Step 2: Whilst skin is still damp, press in a few drops of Wake-Up Droplets skin until fully absorbed. Gentle PHA and allantoin deliver plump, glass-like skin.
Step 3: Massage and pat Serenity Salve into skin to deeply hydrate for an irresistibly touchable face and body!
Step 4: Apply your favourite Merry-Berry Plump oil if you skin needs a lipid-boost to seal in moisture, plump and leave a healthy glow.
What they say about Serenity Salve:
Kathleen Baird-Murray British Vogue, Contributing Beauty Editor:
“I love Saint Iris brand, it’s beautiful, and Serenity Salve’s nomination as The Vogue Beauty ‘Natural Phenomenon’ is so well deserved.”
Emilie Lavinia, Journalist, UN WOMEN UK envoy, IG: @emilielaviniauk:
"My selfcare line up comprise of Saint Iris, basically the nicest most ritualistic products. Taking the time to listen to a full audiobook, have a warm bath and anoint myself with soft cream full of active ingredients to heal my skin seems like a personal kindness. I love the fact Serenity Salve is plant based. It’s delightful, smells gorgeous and goes on really smooth. It’s a yes from me."

Skin is also a reflection of these changes, and hormonal imbalances can increase skin’s exposure to environmental damage and dryness, acne and inflammation.
For example, when oestrogen hormones dip so do hyaluronic acid and collagen in skin, leading to fine lines, dryness and loss of elasticity. Equally, when cortisol is in overdrive, skin produces more sebum, which results in acne, but with low cortisol we see slower healing.
At Saint Iris we believe hormonal imbalances play a key part in skin’s wellness, its appearance and longevity, yet too many skincare products are formulated to be narrowly targeted, meaning the effects of ongoing hormonal fluctuations are left untreated.
Our modern lifestyles call for a holistic approach, and at Saint Iris we favour Adriatic’s wellbeing practices to reconnect to our circadian rhythm and live fully!
Your skin cells function to their own circadian rhythm, and daytime signals the highest sebum production (it peaks at midday), highest skin thickness and requires most protection. Night time is the period when our blood flow and internal temperature are at their peak, skin loses most moisture, cell renewal and barrier permeability are increased. When these are in balance, skin feels smooth, supple and looks radiant, and just knowing that there are easy ways to restore hormonal skin and circadian imbalances can take the stress out of daily routine.
Dry SkinOne of the most common signs of internal hormone imbalances are loss of moisture, dryness, flaky and rough texture, and rosy skin on face or body. Key to treat dry skin are hydrophilic and lipophilic formulas. What are they? Hydrophilic molecules penetrate deeply to function properly, whereas lipophilic molecules remain in the upper skin layers. For example, HA (hyaluronic acid) is a molecule that exists within skin and being hydrophilic means it holds water to skin. Lipophilic or 'lipid-loving' molecules are attracted to lipids (skin's natural fats), which aid the skin’s natural repair process.
For example, our Serenity Salve is formulated with a mix of both HA and fatty acids for skin affinity and increased skin penetration, so to give skin what it needs in the events of seasonal hormone fluctuations.
Adult Acne
One area that has seen plenty of misconceptions is adult acne, and a common one is that adult acne is caused by not consuming skin-targeted supplements, not using acne-specific skincare products or not washing your face enough. Above all, it’s mostly caused by hormonal changes.
When it comes to treating adult acne, less is more, over-washing or over-scrubbing can lead to dryness and irritation in the outer skin layer.
Serenity Salve boasts a non comedogenic formula (to avoid any pore clogging), and gently exfoliates and buffs away dead skin cells with salicylic acid and prebiotic enzymes.
Pro-tips for skin balancing routine:
The environmental stress such as sun damage, and busy and stressful lifestyles can lead to fine lines, loss of elasticity and discolouration. Look for oils rich in vitamin E, as they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturising goodness in, while keeping debris and pollution out. Our Merry-Berry Plump is packed with vitamins A + C + E, and suits all skin types - including those that tend to be on the shiny side.
On days when hormones feel out of balance and skin needs extra protection, apply Merry-Berry Plump on slightly damp skin (or after Serenity Salve) for its high concentration of antioxidants, brightening Ellagic Acid (learn more about acids here) and polyphenols to protect cells against environmental stressors, and provide a gentle way to treat sun spots and fine lines.
The avid users of strong actives (e.g. retinol, AHAs, glycolic acid) may experience a compromised skin’s barrier, and sensitised or irritated skin. This is particularly the case during extreme weather periods and when our hormones are harder to balance, for example during menopause and PMT.
After washing your face and body at night, dab a tiny bit of Merry-Berry Plump on affected areas or all over for its emollients (to soften and smooth), fatty acids (to keep the skin’s natural barrier toned and firm), β-carotene (to restores suppleness), non-greasy, and beautifully fragranced properties.
Diet: strict calorie control diets and highly processed food (typically high with sugar) tend to create spikes in hormones which can lead to stress, changes in skin’s texture and breakouts. Instead, a balanced mix of nourishing proteins (particularly for breakfast), leafy green vegetables, red berries and healthy fats such as oily fish, avocados and nuts - all found in Mediterranean diet - help to curb cravings and keep hormones in check.
Sleep: swap caffeine and alcohol with calming herbal drinks to relax body and mind in the evenings. For anyone going through peri/menopause, HRT and certain supplements (magnesium, zinc, evening primrose oil, St John’s wort, and Omega-7 are some of our founder’s favourites) help to stabilise fluctuations in hormones, leading to improved sleep patterns. (Consult your GP for any HRT and supplement advice to suit your health and personal preferences.)
Active life: seek moments of quiet in nature or stimulating group activities (even board games) for year-round mood, mind and happy hormone boosters. Time away from screens, or physical activity releases serotonin, which promotes a good night’s rest, improves digestion, and skin’s wellness. Try not to stress about what type of activity and opt for anything that makes you happy, after all variety is the spice of life!
Journal: track your hormones and internal circadian rhythm, jot down days when your emotions are unusually high, sleep patterns disturbed (be it voluntarily or not), or life feels out of balance. Equally, acknowledge any positive events or new habits, as expressing gratitude with a daily affirmation can be extremely impactful to your wellbeing, and your inner circadian rhythm.

]]>Over time and particularly during the drier winter months, skin tends to produce diminishing amounts of natural skin oils and it needs more hydration and moisture to retain its suppleness.
Add nourishing emollients to seal skin surface to prevent water from escaping (such as plant oils) and hydrators to absorb water from the atmosphere (such as hyaluronic acid) for a plump, smooth skin. Our Serenity Salve is abundant in both, as it combines a hyper-hydrating olive complex, hyaluronic acid and seed oils to reduce trans-epidermal water loss, and nurture and repair skin’s barrier.
Topically, switch up the routine from light textures, or abrasive formulas and stripping ingredients such as glycolic acids which may feel squeaky clean nonetheless tend to lead to overactive sebum or expose the skin’s barrier to inflammations.
Instead, look for purifying and masking products that are high in iron content that stimulate the oxygenation of the skin. When skin lacks oxygen (due to prolonged time indoors), it results in dullness and dry or oily patchiness. Often bubbling or in the case of our 3-minute express mask, the Purity Paste, the sensation is of indulgent creamy texture, tingling and refreshing feeling on skin, to deliver oxygen directly in to the pores and increase cell metabolism, meaning skin can shed dead cells faster and renew more easily - without drying out or compromising skin’s barrier.
Use on face and body, 2-3 times a week, ideally in the evenings before bed time. Finish by adding a few drops of Merry-Berry Plump concentrate oil with Serenity Salve, and preferably apply on clean and slightly damp skin to lock in the moisture.
Top tip: this is a good time to take extra care and massage products into skin, be it masks or creams, as well applied products tend not to clog pores and are more effective.
Growing wild in remote regions and away from pollution, Croatians swear by St. John's wort oil as their first aid for any skin type - and it’s particularly good to treat scars and discolouration caused by acne and pimples, as these tend to leave longer term marks and compromise skin’s barrier.
This tried and tested remedy - which most keep in their kitchen pantry - is easy to apply regularly as part of skincare routine to prolong the ageless skin glow.
First, pour St. John's wort oil, preferably in a glass jar, and then add other oils. Mix all oils well. Apply this nature’s remedy on affected areas - on face and body. Gently massage in circular motion to improve lymphatic drainage and blood circulation too.
Orange and tangerine peels target the Spleen and Stomach meridians, making them ideal to help with indigestion and bloating, and congested skin. This lack of movement in the digestive system is referred to as food stagnation in Chinese Medicine. The excess food is disrupting the proper flow of qi and hindering the digestive process. Try this zesty tea recipe to improve digestion and get the qi flowing again.
Winter is a perfect time to recharge the immune system and join a slower movement, including lower impact exercise such as stretching classes, slower eating, reading and relaxing. Detoxing the mind and body from daily stressors is as beneficial to our skin and overall wellbeing.
My home-bliss tip: Instead of burning scented candles, try humidifiers (I love adding the Croatian cypress oil which also reminds me of the pure coastal air) in your space to balance the heated home air, drier winter skin and sinuses.
Happy Holidays season from us at Saint Iris!
]]>While retinol is proven to speed up skin cell turnover it’s also one of stronger actives that can over time weaken skin’s barrier and cause dryness and irritation - particularly to skin exposed to sun, those with naturally sensitive skin, or pre/menopausal skin that can often feel more reactive.
No wonder we’re seeing our network of skin therapists and dermatologists increasingly treat reactive, sensitised skin conditions including adult acne and leaky skin’s barrier, brought on by the trend for strong skincare boosters (like retinol).
In contrast, peptides provide a safer route to increase collagen, help firm up skin and smooth fine lines, restore skin’s barrier, decrease inflammation in the skin, and hydrate - without the risk of sun-sensitivity.
Why peptides? Peptides are naturally occurring amino acids that are the building blocks used to make proteins in our skin. Collagen – responsible for texture, tone, elasticity and firmness of skin – is made up of three polypeptide chains. Peptides act as ‘communicators’ when applied topically on skin, and instruct the skin cells to perform functions like building collagen and elastin, reducing inflammation, and maintaining hydration.
And as we lose collagen and elastin and the amount proteins in the dermis significantly reduces over time, peptides provide a non-irritating way to smooth and rejuvenate skin longer term.
Serenity Salve and Vitality Spritz boast plant peptides, made through plant fermentation bio-technology to ensure these small molecules penetrate deeply to activate skin cell renewal, strengthen stressed skin’s barrier, and nourish dry to oily skin types.
We’ve also paired these two formulas with lemon peel ferments (in Vitality Spritz essence) to brighten and treat hyper-pigmented skin and with hyaluronic acid to improve moisturising benefits in our award-winning lotion. Use them as part of AM and PM routines, on face and body, as a delicious treat for seasonal skincare.
Stimulate and renew collagen: Whilst retinol is a faster acting active, both retinol and peptides help to decrease collagen breakdown.
Smooth lines: Peptides are a gentler and slower way to affect the skin on a deep, intense level, and keep the barrier nourished.
Increase firmness and elasticity: Whilst retinols show results quickly, topical peptides reinforce the building blocks of skin, allowing skin to keep its shape, firmness, and elasticity over time.
Strengthen skin: The small molecules that make up retinol go deep beneath the epidermis (outer layer of skin) to your dermis, to help neutralise free radicals. Similarly, peptides can strengthen the proteins and connective tissue in the dermis that improve skin recovery and resilience.
Improve texture: Retinol has an exfoliating effect on the skin’s surface that can help improve texture and tone, however a side effect can be an increase in photo sensitivity. Peptides can also be used to improve texture, helping skin that has specifically experienced exposure to sun radiation.
Or could retinol and peptides be just the best combination in your face and body care routine? We’d recommend using peptides as part of the daily morning routine, and apply retinol on alternate evenings to minimise irritation.

I almost want to eat it! The oil gives my face an immediate glow up without leaving any oily residue. The Serenity Salve is lightweight but still nourishing - it’s a truly wonderful moisturizer and I don’t want any to go to waste."

]]>Still, summer schedules and effective skincare can be natural bedfellows with this streamlined pre and post shave routine that boasts smooth hair-free finish and irritation-free comfort.
For hair free legs, armpits and bikini line, start a pre-shaving routine by gently exfoliating skin to buff and remove dead cells and help loosen any ingrowing hair. However in lieu of sugar scrubs and mechanical exfoliators (grit or beads varieties can exacerbate rashes and irritations on delicate skin), opt for Purity Paste for its creamy, smooth texture that cossets skin. This express treatment is designed to satisfy all face as well as body’s skin needs – making it our most versatile travel companion and a sustainable way to achieve radiant skin head to toe.
Purity Paste’s unique combination of kaolin, natural BHA and PHA acids (read more about the gentle acids used in our skincare here), and warming cedar micro-particles help to effectively re-texturise skin’s surface as well as work deeper inside pores, hence its creamy texture offers anti-inflammatory, frictionless exfoliation.
Apply the treatment mask liberally on damp skin, ideally after cleansing / showering, and massage in to loosen any debris, purify pores, and infuse skin with nourishing seed oils. Rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water, to remove all traces, and pop a few drops of omega-rich Merry-Berry Plump oil while still wet to instantly soothe skin and fill the senses with a luxurious, calming effect – without clogging pores.
Lastly, introduce a non-comedogenic lotion into your body routine as hydration and cell renewal are vital in having healthy, balanced skin – particularly in the dehydrating summer heat. Serenity Salve is infused with Hyaluronic Acid, Seaweed Proteins and Peptides that boost elastin and deliver skin that is well-hydrated and rejuvenated daily, and ultimate less sensitive.
Using body skincare essentials that not only resurface the skin, yet renew skin cells and deeply hydrate can help achieve a plethora of skin benefits – including smooth, calm skin that glows.

Relaxation and recreation in the sun are equally a bliss, but your skin will be working overtime to contend effects of sunburn, dehydration, hyperpigmentation and sun allergies that a prolonged sun exposure can cause – or on an even deeper cellular level, DNA damage.
So let’s give face and body some much deserved TLC – like your favourite sunshine tune – to energise and elevate skin’s wellness. But let’s keep it simple and streamlined with this face-2-body skincare trio.
1. HYDRATE Besides redness and irritation, the biggest effect from sun over exposure is dry skin. The sun can rob your skin of the valuable moisture it needs to thrive, yet most hydration products will not go beyond the surface – leaving the deeper levels of skin untreated. Vitality Spritz combines nourishing seed oils, like Almond, Borage, Safflower, and Pomegranate together with Peptides and PHA (Gluconolactone) that deeply restore moisture. Rich in texture, yet lightweight enough to absorb deeply into skin and bring hydration levels back up, leaving skin smooth and luminous. Our tip: apply on face and body after shower on damp skin for a refreshing hydration.
2. CALM Your skin can turn from sun-kissed to sun-stressed in a matter of hours, particularly under overcast skies. Step up the post-sun recovery, soften and calm skin with a slather of Merry-Berry Plump. This full spectrum antioxidant oil is formulated with seed oils like Strawberry, Cranberry, Blueberry and Raspberry packed with vitamins A + C + E and fatty acids, to deliver calming properties to red and irritated skin. Our tip: apply this concentrate elixir before bed, and wake up to skin that feels comforted and renewed.
3. BRIGHTEN Step out into the sun with feel good skin, all summer long! Our cooling serum, Wake-Up Droplets evokes that vivid, radiant skin with brightening powerhouses in Vitamin C and the Mountain Daisy. Combined with fermented Pomegranate enzymes (a gentle alternative to AHA) that works as a natural exfoliant, these ingredients help renew skin cells and treat signs of sun damage including sun spots, blemishes and hyperpigmentation. Our tip: reduce the use of retinol, glycolic and mandelic acids as together with humidity and sun they can make skin photosensitive, and cause longer term skin discolouration.

]]>What is fermentation? Put simply, it is a metabolic process in which compounds are broken down by micro-organisms, such as bacteria or yeast, into smaller compounds. In our case, microorganisms release enzymes that break down the molecules across key ingredients we select, which then leads to the creation of new substances that are exceptionally beneficial for skin.
Why? As the body's largest organ, skin is the first defence against the weather, pollution, UV rays, and bacteria. By using bio-fermentation, we can make the products more concentrated and easily absorbed, and its molecules smaller and more receptive to skin. Additionally, our face and body can also be a home to over 200 types of bacteria - some visiting for a while and causing mischief, and others remaining as part of our body’s ecosystem [microbiome]. The fermentation method aids the creation of prebiotics and enzymes that help remove ‘bad’ bacteria that cause acne, inflammations as well as body odour.
When the world gives us lemons, we make the most potent skincare formulas!
We use lemon peel sourced from the Italian food manufacturers - as by-products of lemonade and jam productions - that are turned into an effective skincare ingredient. The ferment is created by macerating the lemon peel and incubating it with Lactobacillus lactis bacteria. It is then further isolated to remove potential allergens.
Lemon Peel bioferment is a powerful yet gentle treatment for dark spots and discolouration caused by blemishes, sun damage and inflammations. It has a high acid content which also helps it work well as an antioxidant, to help transform dull skin and leave it looking glowingly happy.
Where you can find it?
Our Vitality Spritz helps to increase moisture and luminosity levels for a radiant, lustrous face and body. Light on skin, the potent essence provides daily nourishment, all while gluconolactone / PHA (learn more about our favourite acids here) and glycerin attract and maintain moisture levels; pomegranate enzymes help to smooth skin, and fermented seaweed protein activates cell turnover. The result? A beautifully balanced skin, boosted in resilience and radiance. Simply pat this into your skin after cleansing during both morning and evening (or whilst on the go) to reap its blissful rewards.
Skin types and Vitality Spritz benefits:
Extra tip: if your face or body cleanser is drying out or stripping the natural oils from skin’s surface, apply Vitality Spritz on damp skin after cleansing, and pat to rebalance and add nourishing oils.
Discover Vitality Spritz for another level skincare; also available in our Bliss Pack.
Inspired by the Adriatic folk recipes, try this refreshing new twist on the traditional lemonade recipe by making a sparkling fermented lemonade with honey. “Sparkling” is simply made possible by CO2 produced by friendly microbes, for a wholesome gut-friendly refreshment.
Start with the ratio of:
Lemon juice : honey : water at about 2 : 1: 1.
For example, use 4 cups of fresh lemon juice, then add 2 cups of honey, and 2 cups of water in each jar when making a batch. You can then play with the ratio of ingredients to suit your taste.
Saluti! Cheers!
]]>So it’s fitting to share our latest collaboration with Kinder Kitchen, and its founder Hannah.
A qualified nutritionist, plant-based recipe developer and health writer, Hannah works with people to help improve their physical and mental health through food and lifestyle. A big part of it is to tune-up people's relationship with food, and with themselves. She says: “It’s amazing how much easier making healthier decisions are when you live with more love for yourself.
I haven't always had an easy relationship with food, in fact it was quite the opposite, but it was my own journey of healing that eventually lead me to a love of food and cooking, which evolved into a fascination with the human body and the capacity of food to heal (which continues to blow my mind, daily!).”
Following a degree in Nutritional Medicine & Dietetics in Sydney, Hannah studied yoga, massage and cooking all over the world. Her mission is to share her knowledge with as many people as possible, in a way that is accessible and sustainable.
Hannah says: “My goal is to inspire people to eat (and live) in a way that is kinder to themselves and the world around them, and to show them that healthy eating doesn't have to be expensive, complicated, boring or centred around the latest fad diet doing the rounds on social media.”
What makes Kinder Kitchen and Hannah special is her interest in gut health and cognitive (brain) health, the latter being a cause very close to her heart after losing her wonderful grandad to Alzheimer's Disease.
Hannah’s take on Saint Iris products:
"Everything about the products feels so nourishing and full of love and they've been the perfect addition to my self care rituals. Merry-Berry Plump literally feels like self love in a bottle and I now can't imagine my morning or evening routine without it. It smells so good that I have to remind myself not to drink it every time I apply it.
I've been using the Purity Paste once or twice a week and it leaves my face looking and feeling more fresh and alive after. As a nutritionist, I'm all about nourishing the skin from the inside out first, but the products we use topically are so important too and work synergistically with a good diet to help us look (and more importantly FEEL!) our most radiant and glowing selves."
Hannah has also created a delicious and nutritious breakfast inspired by ingredients in Merry-Berry Plump. Enjoy!
“There are so many beautiful ways to nourish your skin from the outside and the Merry Berry Plump is a perfect example of that, but it’s important to compliment skincare with a nutrient dense diet and adequate hydration to nourish this skin from the inside out. This breakfast pudding takes inspiration from the berry mix of Merry-Berry Plump and is packed with skin-loving nutrients such as vitamin C and other antioxidants and good fats (especially omega 3 fatty acids). It’s also rich in fibre, which is loved by the gut, and anything loved by the gut is loved by the skin."

]]>Firstly, Saint Iris is one of few brands that looks at skin holistically, and whilst face care brands have been using acids for a long time, we’ve utilised the power of acids for transformative results on face and body.
Why acids?
Either naturally or synthetically derived, acids have an ability to noticeably resurface the skin, brighten, and longer term treat pigmentation and unevenness. They have for this reason gained a strong following, however the recent rise in mono-dosing and high percentage acid products have led to an increase in people experiencing the skin barrier problems.
At Saint Iris, we carefully balance acids in our formulas to bring gradual and irritation-free skin wellness results. The acids we use and recommend are:
PHA (Polyhydroxy acid) / Gluconolactone is a naturally derived ingredient that has multiple skin care benefits, and frankly we can’t get enough of it, in fact we’ve used it in all our aqueous formulas! Here is why:
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) / Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliant with the ability to penetrate deeper into pores to help shed dead cells and clear out debris. We use BHA derived from the Willow Bark that is also high in tannins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and minerals, all of which help soothe the skin and aid in cell regeneration, allowing for a more youthful, refreshed skin tone - but without stripping or drying out skin.
Salicylic acid is a perfect way to elevate your body care, and whilst scrubs or similar mechanical exfoliants (tasked to physically change skin’s appearance) have been around for a long time, it’s becoming more evident that acids treat skin more effectively and kindly - so put down the abrasive coffee beans and shell scrubs and opt for our express face + body treatment with Purity Paste.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) - Despite its name, this acid doesn’t exfoliate, instead it plumps by attracting water molecules and helps create volume. It’s an effective water-retaining hydrator that improves the appearance of fine lines, softens and gives skin that lit-from-within effect. Hyaluronic acid works well paired with salicylic acid, as formulated in our Serenity Salve lotion, as this combination cancels out any signs of dryness and irritation whilst locking moisture into the outer surface of the skin and ensuring the protective barrier is strengthened - making it perfect for all skin types.
Plant oil acids - Slightly different to the other acids, the essential fatty acids (EFAs) help to decrease trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and offer antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. They act as building blocks in the skin cells, strengthening the skin's surface layers for a smoother and healthier complexion. You can find EFAs in all our products, and we balance them to suit drier and oilier skin types, to provide the nourishment skin needs throughout all seasons.
Ellagic acid - Our Merry-Berry Plump is highly potent in ellagic acid, a natural and gentle alternative to hydroquinone (sans the irritation), to brighten and repair skin damaged by environmental stressors, e.g. UV rays and pollution. We use this effective group of ingredients to help protect and treat skin affected by hyperpigmentation and discolouration, making it perfect for those looking for a youthful and outdoors-y lifestyle.
Enzymes vs Acids: You may also have used enzymes as exfoliators, and we love them for their ability to improve the skin’s texture. Here is how the two compare:
While both exfoliate at the chemical level, they do so in a slightly different way. Enzymes are small molecules found in fruits (we use fermented pomegranate sourced from by-products of food and juicing productions) that break down the protein in dead skin cells. They remove dead skin cells and smooth the surface of the skin, but they don't promote cell turnover at skin’s deeper layers. On the other side, acids penetrate deeper into the skin and accelerate turnover for all your skin cells, not just the dead skin on skin’s surface. We’ve combined the two for a sustained, longer-term skin wellness, and the most evident result can be experienced with our serum Wake-Up Droplets which offers multiple surface and deeper skin benefits - across all age groups.
Stronger is not always better
Although trendy, there are many skincare acids we’ve decided to not use in our formulas as they have a greater effect on skin’s barrier, including irritation, dryness and oil imbalance. For that reason, we don’t use AHA acids (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) e.g. Glycolic acid, and Azelaic and Mandelic acids which are typically used to treat acne-prone skin, as these acids can lead to skin irritations.
Another widely used acid is Ascorbic acid, a synthetic type of Vitamin C that is used to brighten skin. We have opted for a gentler and natural version of Vitamin C (ascorbyl glucoside) that is also more stable, and we’ve turned to Adriatic Mountain Daisy active - rich in allantoin and betulinic acid for the brightening benefits; both can be found in our serum Wake-Up Droplets.
A few acid fails to avoid:

]]>Armpit wellness is affected by seasonal and hormonal changes, as well as the lifestyle and bathroom habits. The delicate underarms are prone to being moist due to lack of airflow and its many sweat glands, and therefore they can often harbour bacteria and fungal-yeast organisms. So how best to care for your armpits in an effective yet gentle way?
Deodorants, antiperspirants, antibacterial sprays…
As the name suggests, antiperspirants are tasked to suppress sweating and tend to block skin from perspiring. This helps short-term to create a feeling of freshness, yet after a while bacteria and dead skin cells build up, which can lead to blocked pores, body odour, redness or itchiness.
If you have switched to the natural alternatives with aluminium-free formulas, you may find that perspiration increases as deodorants and some sprays are designed to not block the sweat glands, hence you may notice the odour-producing bacteria in your armpits is not fully neutralised and application top ups may be needed.
Lifestyle matters
From smell change to skin bumpiness, fluctuations in body temperature (day to night, or during some times of year and life), and types of fabrics worn can affect the armpit conditions. Likewise, shaving or waxing can cause skin irritations (e.g. dryness, itchiness, rough texture) as well as the skin darkening, also called armpit shadow.
Here are our easy underarm skin care tips to make weekly upkeep a cinch:
1. Cleanse daily (or more often if you’re highly active or sporty), and exfoliate twice a week - however try our Purity Paste in lieu of body scrubs. Scrubs can easily irritate the delicate armpit skin, whilst our creamy mask glides on easily, and relies on chemical detox instead of the harsh mechanical beads or grit.
Tip: Apply the Purity Paste mask on dry skin, either with fingers or use our softest brush to massage skin and release any dead skin build up. The warming mask works fast to open pores and remove debris (bacteria, dead cells, deodorant build up), nourish the delicate armpit area, minimise ingrowing hair and brighten the skin so to banish the darker skin shadow.
Speedy pitstop tip: When in a hurry, use Purity Paste as a cleansing balm, or mix with your body wash and work into lather before cleansing the armpits thoroughly.
Rinse off after three minutes, or wipe off thoroughly with wet flannel (don’t worry - the product will wash off and won’t stain, just pop your flannels to wash afterwards) to reveal sleeker skin! Have you seen us on ITV This Morning feature on armpit care? Read more here.
2. Post-masking steps: This is the moment to shave, as hairs will be softer and easier to remove without pulling on skin.
Clean off the area with dry towel, and follow with a pea size dab of nourishing lotion, and only then apply deodorant or antiperspirant. Our Serenity Salve is non-comedogenic, rich in nourishing seed oils and hydrating hyaluronic acid, so to not overload the pit area.
3. What to wear: Raised body temperature or hormone fluctuations affect the armpit odour, so try to opt for natural breathable materials or looser arm garments. Lastly, choose antibacterial or fragrance-free deodorants if inflammations and itchiness are a frequent occurrence.

]]>The skin is the primary and best defence of the body against external irritants. It has a protective barrier that prevents bacteria and harmful substances from entering the body, while limiting water loss and dehydration. Skin does that successfully with sebum – oily substance produced in the sebaceous glands – to keep moisture inside the skin. Sebum transports antioxidants to the surface of the skin, and antioxidants as natural compounds protect us against the damaging effects of free radicals. This process keeps the skin healthy and hydrated, maintaining its elasticity and firmness.
Any prolonged exposure to water will strip skin of its natural oils, and whilst baths may be soothing for skin conditions such as eczema, they’re not quite as beneficial as showering.
The one benefit to bathing ritual is its effect on the mind and wellbeing. Decreases in stress hormones (cortisol) have been reported with warm bathing, as research has found that they may help to balance the feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin.
Also, taking a bath before bed can increase body’s temperature at night, which helps synchronise our natural circadian rhythms – leading to better, deeper sleep. However anyone experiencing hot flashes may find the steamy bath increases body's core temperature, which can trigger sweating and redness.
How to bathe well for your skin, at any age?

]]>Additionally, the new sanitising routine includes harsh antibacterial ingredients such as alcohol that tend to be skin irritants - stripping hands of their natural oils and moisture, and exposing the skin’s barrier to external elements including longer-term sun damage.
We’ve put together three express steps to rectify any unwelcome symptoms, particularly during summer months, and give your skin the loving care.
1. Healing treatment
Our miracle mask is enriched with a complex of seed oils and powerful acids such as PHA (polyhydroxy acid) that actively attract water molecules and hydrate skin as well as neutralise free radicals - plus provide antimicrobial properties, making it perfect to heal and soothe sore skin.
How to treat? Apply Purity Paste with hands or masking brush and massage across hands, wrists and cuticles for three minutes. Use the time to rotate wrists and stimulate lymphatic drainage for an added de-puffing benefit. Rinse off with lukewarm water thoroughly.
2. Brightening protection
The naturally thinner skin on back of hands and forearms is the first area to catch sun rays, and the increased sanitising and hand washing routine has led to accelerated sun damage and skin thinning.
Our multi award-winning serum, Wake-Up Droplets is widely recognised for its brightening and hyperpigmentation-busting efficacy. The gentle formula combines Vitamin C with Adriatic Mountain Daisy, potent in skin brightening arbutin, and soothing allantoin and betulinic acid, helping to fade age spots and discolouration left by blemishes.
How to treat? Apply serum after washing hands, its matte formula comfortably sits on skin and forms a perfect after-sun ritual. Always follow with SPF when on-the-go.
3. Strengthening renewal
Build in a much-needed moisture replenishing, resilience and cell turnover with a rich mix of olive glycerides, peptides and proteins to help replenish skin plumping cells depleted with frequent hand washing.
A quick swipe of non-comodegenic (zero clogging or grease) Serenity Salve lotion helps to quickly restore moisture that may have washed down the drain with the germs.
Spotless hands are on the sunny horizon!
Following 14 months of trials, I’m incredibly honoured that our Wake-Up Droplets has won Bronze in the prestigious ‘Miracle Treatment - Serum’ category at Beauty Bible Awards! According to BB team, this category saw one of the highest numbers of entries of ANY type of product, yet it’s also amazing to see that our game-changing serum is the only one that is for Face and Body yet it punches its weight (stylishly!) in the skin-transforming benefits.
Judged by real women panellists over 35, in order to ensure the products were put through their paces properly – with instructions to use on one side of the face only, for true comparison. See below for comments share about our serum, and the impact it made on our testers' skin and confidence.
Real Women – Real Life testers' comments:
‘So many people have asked if I have been away as my skin looks radiant, glowing and rested. Someone even asked if I had a little Botox and filler!!’
‘My lord, I love this product! Having Googled it now, this is going to be an expensive find, but it’s absolutely beautiful. I looked forward to using it and skin is definitely better, clearer and brighter.’
‘I have to admit: I've stopped only using on one side as I really wanted the benefit on ALL of my face! Skin felt much clearer and brighter – pigmentation felt lessened and generally skin looked more even and clear. The other thing I really noticed was the improvement to the pigmentation issues I have from sun damage. After using this serum for nearly three months on the side of my face that I have been testing I have found the sun spots have actually gone!’
‘This serum is incredible. I have received so many compliments from friends and colleagues asking if I've had work done and it’s all thanks to this serum. Skin feels tighter, brighter and softer, while sun damage has totally disappeared on the side of my face that I tested the serum on. This serum really gave me my skin confidence back and I would now be happy to go make up free.’
‘My skin looks a lot brighter and definitely more even.’
‘14 days after first using this serum, blemishes had cleared up, fine lines seemed fainter, sun damage and freckles had faded considerably ... I was only wearing tinted moisturiser as my skin seemed to glow and I wasn’t covering up any sallowness. The greatest visible improvement was to my décolletage: Brighter and more even skin tone, sun damage and blotchiness had faded considerably.’
‘Lovely product - so much more than just a serum - You are encouraged to enjoy the experience whilst using this - inhale the scent - I really enjoy having this step in my morning routine, it smells lovely and so easy to take the product down onto neck and décolletage.’

]]>We scooped top gongs in two very special categories, which we know you also love Saint Iris for:
– Serenity Salve is the Best Body Lotion
– Wake-Up Droplets is the Best Aromatherapy Beauty Product
Sanela’s dream has always been for you to have the best skincare for body (not just face) as well as products that do wonders, feel terrific to use plus make you feel wonderful. We are thrilled that the Beauty Shortlist team and judges felt the same.
Global awards since 2017, Beauty Shortlist launched in the UK in 2012 by natural beauty journalist and eco lifestyle advocate (and Goddess!) Fiona Klonarides, these awards are a level playfield for brands new and established, big and small, and they are 100% sponsor and ad free. All entries are tried and tested by a group of independent, international judges.
A big thank you to the judges and Beauty Shortlist teams for choosing our products as their winners in what’s been an awe-inspiring line up of innovative and passionate brands.
This is our story so far...I hope you'll enjoy the read!
With love,
Sanela x

I’m happy to announce that Saint Iris and our Serenity Salve Resilience-Building Lotion are nominated in the Vogue Beauty Awards!
The winners are chosen by you, not the industry. May I ask you to take a moment and cast your vote for Saint Iris? Click HERE, and you'll find our Serenity Salve in Category 1, The Natural Skincare Phenomenon.
I launched Saint Iris in latter 2018 with a single ethos: to create a smart, sustainable beauty brand with a sunshine soul. It’s therefore an honour to find our Serenity Salve selected by Vogue as one of the top 100 beauty products nominated this year!
Our lotion is the 360º multi-tasker that hydrates deeply, stimulates cell turnover, calms and strengthens skin’s barrier and harnesses the power of the timeless Adriatic apothecaries formulas.
Thank you for your support, Sanela 💚
